The Giordana Gran Fondo National Championship Series is excited to announce the arrival of the Tour of Georgia Gran Fondo timed Sections in Alpine Helen. Hundreds of bicycle riders have already registered for this European–style ride and race, which begins in downtown Helen at 8 a.m., Sunday, May 7.
The Gran Fondo National Championship Series is comprised of seven stages in cities across the United States. The Tour of Georgia Gran Fondo will have options to suit all abilities. The Gran Fondo is 100 miles, taking riders into multiple counties over Unicoi Gap, Hogpen Gap, Snake Branch and Oakey Mountain. The Medio option is 60 miles, and the Piccolo ride is 25 miles. Each option has timed sections so that riders may compete for best times. The highest point of the ride is on the Richard Russell Scenic Highway, 3,470 feet with a grade of 12 percent.
One of cycling’s top commentators and ex-professional rider, Frankie Andreu, will bring the ride to life as MC of the 2017 Tour of Georgia Gran Fondo.
Cindy Bailey, president of the White County Chamber of Commerce & Welcome Center, says “We are pleased to have recruited this event to White County and Helen and look forward to welcoming this national cycling series to the mountains of northeast Georgia. We know that riders will enjoy the beauty of the area even as they challenge themselves on the steep climbs and the curving descents.” The Tour of Georgia in Helen joins the ranks of 6 locations in the Giordana Grand Fondo National Championship Series which includes races in San Antonio, FL; Butler, NJ; Asheville, NC; Golden, CO and Fredrick, MD.
